Midday Reflections

Why is it, fandom, that just as my love for thee reaches its apex you run out of good fic? Why do you make it seem like there is a neverending well of wordy goodness at the outset and then so tragically fail to live up to expectations in the end? In the end, fandom, I think the blame for my soulless, empty fandom-hopping is your own fault.

Seriously, I need to get the fandom whore thing under control. This is getting ridiculous. I wish I could name all the ones I've loved for a time. Some of them, I can count the number of actual pieces of real canon that I've watched on one hand. Learning a fandom through fandom is an odd experience. It's kind of like reading a book and then being shocked by how the movie of the book casts the characters you've come to love.

My two lovelies right now represent opposite ends of that spectrum. House was a fandom that I happened upon through a crossover fic(CSI, a perennial favorite). I was so drawn in by the lovely portrayals therein that I first explored the web fandom and then ventured into the actual episodes. Fake punditry was one that I started watching because I wanted an alternate view of all the bullshit that the real news was reporting, and fake news seemed like a tiny bastion of sanity. I didn't have any idea that there was a fandom for it until I accidentally stumbled upon it while looking for the official website. And that is the weirdest thing ever. RPF/S kind of squicks me, but they're playing characters so... the nice thing about this one is that the actual material interests me far more than the fandom. I don't think I'll be quitting it any time soon.

I think there is some actual connection between my love for the two of these, though. It's the similarities between Jon Stewart and House that get me. At heart, I think they're both raging idealists. Crazy, you say? One of them hates all of humanity, and the other spends his days ruthlessly mocking them in clever montage form? Yes, I realize this, but those traits stem from the idealism. House has an incredibly high standard for the world to which no one is capable of living up, making him a miserable asshole. Stewart has an incredibly high standard for journalism and politics (relatively speaking, in this day and age) that, because it is always disappointed by reality, has to express itself in comedy. I am begging you, higher powers, keep them honest. Please don't let House accept boring people for no reason other than the writers have taken a liking to them. Please (this one especially) don't let Stewart lose his sense of perspective.

Wow. Deep fandom thinkings. On another note, one of my 'neighbors' has written on her whiteboard, "There is nothing more romantic than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shore no matter how many times it is sent away." Is this truly romantic? Or just creepy and the shore should consider filing a restraining order? Also, I can't stand it when people refer to large groups of women as 'ladies.' 'Lady,' to my mind, implies a woman of class, with high standards for herself that she sticks to. True ladies are rare, and they certainly don't come in packs.

Why do I treat this thing like a Livejournal? I have my own Livejournal. Why on earth don't I use it? Note to self: put on picture of plant to justify existence of journal. Also, remind parents to water forgotten forget-me-not.
